Chicago Workforce Board

The Chicago Workforce Board, a nonprofit organization with the mission of helping workers meet the needs of employers, has the vision of fostering a community of qualified workers who readily meet the personnel requirements that will make Chicago's employers highly competitive in today's economy. In order to achieve this goal, CWB is supporting LearnTec's efforts to develop an advanced credentialing system.

LearnTec has played an integral role in designing the key components of this new learning system. The primary components include:

  • training providers to prepare trainees for MSSC performance standards and NIMS machining credentials
  • identified employers who will hire credentialed graduates of these programs, and
  • a well-equipped and centrally located credentialing center designed to ensure teachers and trainees reach their credentialing goals.

LearnTec identified a comprehensive, two-phase training program for the CWB credentialing system. The program includes four primary areas, each of which covers multiple topics. These areas are MSSC standards skills, NIMS Metalforming Level I, NIMS Drill Press, and NIMS Job Planning, Benchwork and Layout. The second, more advanced phase would cover remaining NIMS level-one machining credentials.

The new credentialing system is in place, and the Chicago Workforce Board reports that it is being met with great enthusiasm on the part of employees and employers alike. The program is in the early stages of full implementation, but all participants are highly encouraged by its early success.
