Olson International
Olson International Inc., a leader in precision metal stamping and assemblies,
approached LearnTec to develop a customized learning system that would outline
worker career paths, utilize pay-for-skills and incorporate national skill
standards. One of Olson's goals was to train and credential all stamping
operators and die setters with NIMS standards.
LearnTec began by gathering baseline information on current skill gaps and
needs on the existing Olson workforce through extensive staff interviews.
Information gathered through these interviews was referenced to competencies
required by NIMS metal-forming standards. LearnTec then modified a NIMS
assessment to fit Olson's needs and used this test to place press operators
into three different groups, by competency level. Operators placed in the
highest level would receive their pay-for-skills bonus. Operators in the
second level would receive an identified set of metal-forming processes
and theory training, and operators in the third level were identified as
needing basic and substantial theory-related skills training. LearnTec also
outlined a course for exceptionally qualified operators that would feature
even more advanced technical credentials from NIMS.
This solution proved to be a cost-effective learning system that provides
Olson International with documentation to demonstrate the individual improvement
of its employees, and the overall advances in its workforce capability.
Employees are rewarded for their achievements, which provides motivation
and improves morale. The result has improved productivity and greatly assisted
Olson International to prepare for the challenges of staying competitive
in the 21st century.
